What is this?
BACKGROUND:
The Washington State Legislature thrust our state into a national leadership role by passing progressive climate legislation over the last few years. The Climate Commitment Act (CCA) and the Fuel Standards Act were passed in 2021. Implementation of the CCA began in January 2023.
INITIATIVE 2117:
The CCA is now threatened by Initiative 2117, which will be on the ballot in November. This Initiative would repeal the CCA, which would have very detrimental effects on Washington State's ability to meet its greenhouse gas emissions reduction target and on revenue that the state could generate to pay for climate mitigation and environmental justice work.
KEYNOTE SPEAKER:
LWVWA Issue Chair for Climate and Energy, Marty Gibbons, is the keynote speaker for these Unit Meetings. He will explain how the League will be engaged in efforts to defeat this measure and what happens if we fail. Marty will also explain how Puget Sound Energy plans to “decarbonize” its energy mix (as now required by law). Will we, the gas & electric ratepayers, be stuck with the bill?
Additionally, after the hottest year on record, we will look at the global, national, and state issues facing our good Mother Earth. These Unit Meetings will be highly informative, data-packed sessions you will not want to miss.
