Candidate Forum Committee
This group organizes public forums for candidates for local offices. We also partner with other Leagues for Congressional District forums and more. Most forums happen on Zoom with a live audience and some are recorded and shown on TV Tacoma. Training is provided for those volunteers who would like to learn how to moderate these forums or co-moderate. There are also roles for volunteers who would like to remain behind the scenes. Forums on local issues are also planned by this committee.
Civic Education Committee
This team visits local high schools and presents about the importance of participating in the right to vote, the history of voting, and offers students the opportunity to register in Pierce County. Our teams typically make about 50 presentations per year to sections of Civics and AP Gov classes, reaching over 1,000 students. If you have experience presenting to groups and are interested in joining this committee, please contact Liz Knox at: lizknox74@hotmail.com.
Climate & Environment Committee
The purpose of this group is to inform League members about climate, environment and energy issues, advocate for effective policies, and organize local actions to reduce pollution and greenhouse gases, with a flexible approach that adapts to members' interests and community needs. If you are interested, please contact Chuck Jensen at cjensen767@gmail.com.
Communications Team
The Communications Committee works to promote LWVTPC events, maintain the website, post to social media, and maintain/build internal and external communications. Interested? Volunteer opportunities available: * Write content for website and the Voter * Web page maintenance and development * Photography & graphics work * Respond to request for all-member notifications (getting the word out) * Assist with marketing of events via website and social media. For more information contact Theresa Power-Drutis at tpdrutis@nctacoma.org.
Election Observer Team
This team provides independent observers for each Pierce County election. Observers observe the processing of ballots and signature checking and are informal community ambassadors attesting to the trustworthiness of our award-winning county elections. Annual training (one hour) is required. Counting is held at the Elections Center in Tacoma and shifts are usually two hours.
Housing & Homelessness Team
This group advocates for effective homelessness and housing policies, increased investment in affordable and social housing, and expanded access to supportive services. We actively engage with local coalitions and policy advocates and maintain membership in the Pierce County Affordable Housing Consortium.
Membership Committee
Membership Committee is a very active group that meets monthly September through May. We recruit new members, send a welcome letter and make contact to find out the level of involvement they are seeking. We also support the LWV Unit by identifying member volunteers for events like the Annual Fundraiser, Annual Meeting, Biannual Meet and Greet for all members. The Meet and Greet is a gathering where new members can meet the Key Issue Leaders, ask questions and join in the work for that issue. Upcoming programs for 2026 are: an organized mentorship program and an all-member summer potluck picnic. All members are welcome to attend our monthly meetings - your input is valuable. Please Contact Glenda Hammond at glenda7742lwv@gmail.com.
Observer Corps
Want to find out what’s going on in your local city or county government? Want to let others know? Want to use your writing skills? Join the LWVTPC Observer Corps! Our volunteers help keep our community informed and hold our elected officials accountable. Being an Observer involves attending at least one public meeting a month and writing up a meeting summary (a minimum of about 3-4 hours a month). As an Observer you choose what meetings and issues to follow. You can attend in person or watch remotely. While you cannot participate in the government meetings, you can inform others on what issues are discussed, what laws and policies are implemented, and how your local government is spending taxpayer money. If you are interested, please contact Lydia Zepeda at zepelow@gmail.com We can set up a time to chat about your interests and set up training.
T.R.Y. Team
The They Represent You (T.R.Y.) Team assembles, prints and distributes the annual Directory of Elected Officials. The final directory is posted to our website and printed copies are distributed to libraries, school districts, municipalities, community and technical colleges, county and state elected officials, churches and a variety of community organizations.
