Be informed; see our Observer reports here.

In the absence of regular news reporting on many city councils, county council, school boards and the Port of Tacoma, our League Observer reports offer timely information about what those jurisdictions are doing.

These reports are by members of the League who regularly attend public government meetings to report on what they observe. A League Observer is trained to be impartial, silent and respectful. They may, however, ask questions for clarification. They help promote public interest in local government as well as enhance accountability.

Let's Help Each Other ... Avoid Fires....Give Water to People without Homes

Red Flag Warning

Local weather forecasters from Washington and Oregon have issued a red flag warning for the fourth of July. A red flag warning means warm temperatures, low humidity and strong, gusty winds are happening or are about to happen. It’s in effect until 7 p.m. The National Weather Service advises residents to avoid burning things and to be careful around open flames. They should also safely dispose of cigarettes as fires can ignite and spread quickly.

And help our neighbors who are without homes

This is an excerpt from a regular email post by Richard Dorsett. It is particularly important that we support the Coalition to End Homelessness in providing water for people without housing. The summer can be brutal.

People often ask how they can help. I generally point them and their donations towards St Vincent de Paul’s new outreach center or Brotherhood Rise. There are others who do good work and offer services, but these two set the bar high for the compassion and services they provide. And just two weeks ago, we began Tacoma Street Books, a mobile library serving people who live outside. Colleague Tim makes fresh bagels on Wednesdays and serves bagel sandwiches. Bagels and Books we have begun calling our operation. The point is that ending homelessness is difficult and complicated, but helping people in need does not have to be. It is something we all can do.”
